Dallas Criminal Lawyer: HB 1790 Offers a Fresh Take on State Jail Cases

Tis the season of the Texas Legislature. That brings some hair-brained, horrible legislation and, every once in a while, some fresh, good ideas. HB 1790 falls into the latter category. Authored by Rep. Oscar Longoria, the bill would allow people charged with state jail felonies (other than assaults and other “crimes against persons”) who successfully complete their probations to have their convictions reduced to class A misdemeanors.

There’s some question about the constitutionality of this, but this is good thinking. Lord knows the state jail system isn’t what was originally intended and needs to change. Thanks to Grits for Breakfast for the good reporting on this one.
