Jordan Edwards, a black, unarmed teenager in a car leaving a party, being shot by a white Balch Springs officer made national news. The story only got bigger when it came to light that the officer lied about key facts. Officers who shoot unarmed civilians rarely get charged, much less indicted. It was refreshing to see the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office bring charges against this former officer. It is even more refreshing to see an indictment be handed down by the grand jury. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though: an indictment is not a conviction and we are a long ways away from justice. At least we are moving in the right direction, though.
