Kudos to Emily DePrang and the folks over at the Texas Observer for stellar reporting on the Dawson State Jail. If you haven’t already read the piece, read it now. To summarize: medical care at Dawson is absolutely abysmal. The private company that runs the place wants it’s contract (which is up soon) renewed but just about everybody else (including a slew of important Texas legislators – not to mention Sen. John Whitmire, the chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee) want it closed. The city of Dallas wants it closed to because having a raggedy state jail right next to their fantasized Trinity family Disneyland isn’t good for business. The state needs to save money and state jail pop is down. This thing should be a no brainer.
UPDATE: Dawson finally closed.
