At a Start-Studded Event, A Lawyer and his Client Steal the Show
New Friends New Life is a Dallas-based non-profit that empowers trafficked and sexually exploited teen girls, women, and their children. The organization recently held a luncheon, which raised more than $1.1 million to amplify awareness of this issue, and welcomed speaker, Kerry Washington (AKA. Olivia Freaking Pope). While Washington spoke eloquently about generational trauma, healing, and the importance of standing in one’s agency, the true highlight was the recognition of attorney Mike Howard for his life-changing intervention in Annette Bailey’s life.
A Simple Question Changes a Life
Bailey, a former drug addict turned NFNL’s economic empowerment specialist, took the stage and recounted how her life took a turn for the better when a court-appointed attorney genuinely inquired about her drug issues. This seemingly simple question was a pivotal moment in her journey to rehabilitation.
Years later, when Howard read an article where Bailey credited an unnamed lawyer with saving her life, he realized he was that very lawyer. This reunion culminated at the luncheon, where Bailey, in a heartfelt gesture, surprised Howard with the ProtectHER award.
